Interventional Cardiology and NEB: A Love Story

Updated: Feb 17, 2019

Today is Valentine’s Day which conjures up images of roses, chocolates, and for some unyielding loneliness. At NEB we don’t care which category you fall into, but we do care a lot about hearts. The pink hearts that are prevalent throughout this holiday are symbolic of a heart that is beating strong with blood coursing through the coronary vessels. And even though this day might not be rooted in significant NEB we are in the business of helping to heal broken hearts, specifically through interventional cardiology.

Interventional cardiology is a branch of cardiology that deals specifically with the catheter-based treatment coronary disease and structural heart defects. With the speed of medicine moving at an incredible rate, in the year 2022, the Interventional Cardiology sector alone is expected to be worth 22.9 billion dollars. There is always a constant need to invent new technology and techniques that will clean out blocked vessels, analyze existing blockages, repair structures, and provide active therapy to someone’s heart. Heart disease is the number one killer of citizens in the United States with Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) responsible for over 370,000 deaths annually according to the CDC. Fortunately, research in this sector seems to be moving forward rapidly. Catheter-based therapies that were invented just a few years ago have now been augmented with the integration of sensors and better access that is improving patient outcome and making the doctor’s job easier. This type of surgery has become increasingly popular due to its relative non-invasiveness and the ability for patients to be up and walking just hours after surgery.

The design team at Northeast Biomedical started working with medical devices and instrumentation many years ago and have had the great pleasure of partnering with companies to develop revolutionary technologies. We have developed diagnostic catheters that integrate optical fibers or ultrasound transducers, have cleaned out blocked coronaries, and repaired heart defects. We have also designed new generations of coronary stents and other delivery systems that will bring the latest advances in technology into the operating room. All of these leaps forward have built upon previous examples of the work that we and others have compleated in the field. We combine the capabilities of our team in developing the catheters with the ability to create the instruments to read the advanced sensors giving the doctor more information about the procedure. The provides an excellent opportunity for our development partners who are looking to create the next generation of catheter and instruments.

So if you have an idea for a catheter, or even if you just want to talk this Valentine's day, give NEB a call at (978) 649-5555. We would be glad to make a date!
